Getting good results from online image tools

Most image problems come down to three things: file size, dimensions and format. A phone photo can be 4000 pixels wide and several megabytes, which is far more than a web page, an email or a form upload needs. Resizing to the size you will actually display gives the biggest saving; compression then trims the rest.

Choose the format on purpose. JPG suits photographs and compresses well. PNG keeps sharp edges and transparency, so it is better for logos, screenshots and diagrams, but photos saved as PNG are large. WebP usually produces smaller files than both at similar quality and is supported by every current browser.

Resize first, then compress. Compressing a huge image hard makes it blocky; shrinking it to a sensible width and compressing lightly looks better and weighs less. For a blog or content image, 1200 to 1600 pixels wide is usually plenty.

Keep your original. Lossy compression cannot be undone. Work on a copy and keep the untouched file.

Everything on this page runs in your browser, so photos of documents, IDs or family never leave your device. That is the main reason to prefer local tools for personal images.
