Frequently Asked Questions
Is hashing reversible?
No, secure hashes are designed to be one-way.
Is this local?
Yes, when Web Crypto is available.
What hashes are for
A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of your input. Type or paste text to get SHA-256 and SHA-512 values. The same text always produces the same hash, and changing one character changes the whole result, which makes hashes ideal for verifying that data has not been altered.
To check a download, compute the hash of the file or text and compare it with the value published by its source; if they differ, something changed. Hashes cannot be reversed to recover the original text.
Important: a fast hash like SHA-256 is not suitable for storing user passwords on its own. Use a purpose-built algorithm such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2. Limits: this tool hashes text, not files, and runs entirely in your browser.
